The
youngest of seven children in a single-parent family
whose mother worked as a housekeeper/school
custodian, Areka Spencer lived in the projects until
she was 13. At 15 she became a single mother and was
told by friends, family, and society that the mistake
would cost her any hope of a successful career or
life. Yet Areka had faith -- in God and herself. Determined
that no one would decide her future for her, she quit
school, obtained her GED and started college in what
would have been her senior year in high school.
Ms. Spencer began her career
in communication at 16 and by age 21 had become a
national news anchor. Her television and radio career
includes the American Urban Radio Network in Pittsburgh,
ABC Radio Network out of Dallas, KXAS TV in Dallas,
and Paxson Communications in Tampa. After overcoming
the obstacles many African Americans face, Areka had
achieved the success of which she'd dreamed. Today,
Areka has devoted her career to motivating others
to keep their dreams alive, helping people to do what
she had done and... make it happen!
Continuing to live her dream,
Areka founded "Sisters Offering Uplifting Lifestyle
Support to Sisters" (SOULS-S). For more information
